Filming at Monona Terrace
Monona Terrace is Madison's most iconic wedding venue: a Frank Lloyd Wright designed landmark perched on the shore of Lake Monona. The sweeping curves of the architecture, the water stretching out below the rooftop, and the capitol city skyline behind it create conditions that are almost unfairly beautiful to film. No matter where we point a camera, something stunning fills the frame.
The rooftop is the moment we plan the whole day around. As the sun drops, the lake picks up color, the skyline lights come on, and for a short window everything glows at once. Emily and Bobby's film lives in that window, and it remains one of our most requested films to this day. We map out where the light will fall ahead of time so your portraits land in the best of it without stealing you away from your guests for long.
Inside, Wright's geometry gives us clean, elegant lines to compose against, and the lake-facing glass keeps natural light in play deep into the day. It is a venue that rewards patience and planning, and we bring both.
Planning your wedding at Monona Terrace
Getting ready
Downtown Madison puts hotels and getting-ready suites minutes from the venue, which keeps travel time out of your timeline. We love starting the film with the city waking up around you before the day narrows to just the two of you on that rooftop.
Ceremony to reception flow
Whether your ceremony is on the rooftop or in one of the interior spaces, the venue keeps everything close together. We use the transition to slip out for skyline portraits at dusk, then rejoin the reception before the first dance so the film carries the full arc of the night.
